Wedding Cake Wednesday: My Latest Creation

This Wedding Cake Wednesday, whilst I am hard at work on this weekend’s wedding cake, I thought I would share with you the first pictures of the cake that I made last weekend.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on this cake as it was for dear friends of mine. When Leanne and James’ invitation landed through my letterbox, a wave of inspiration descended and I drew them a cake. I popped my sketch in an envelope and headed over to their home for one of their legendary dinner parties.

The next morning, I awoke with a raging hangover and a text to say that they loved the design and only requested one small amendment… more on that later.

On Friday, I donned my wedding finery and drove out to the wedding venue with a car full of friends and cake – taking myself off to the reception area to arrange the black sugar roses on top of the cake before joining the assembled masses in the bar.

It may have rained but I have never seen such a sunny Bride! I’ll share a picture of the Bride and Groom with their cake when the official photographs come through to me – you can see a preview from my own phone camera on my Facebook and Instagram pages.

The cake itself was three tiers of my Red Velvet Cake and it went down a treat. Some guests were heard to have gone back for fourth helpings!

I loved making this one. Top tip for cake designers – I never use pre-coloured black fondant to cover a cake as it tends to taste a little too chemical for my liking. Instead, I cover in white fondant and airbrush the following day to achieve black. I do this with any deep shade.

Remember that little amendment that the couple requested? I wonder if you can spot it. Look at the roses…

An tiny black sugar bat is hiding in there for the recovering goth Groom! A little personal touch will never take away from the glamour of your big day and will make you smile forever as you remember it.
