Modern Watercolour Cake

I am thrilled to share this new cake with you. Inspired by Monet’s Water Lilies, this airbrushed design features in the current issue of Cake Decorating Heaven Magazine with step by step pictures to help you recreate the look at home.

As is so often true, this kind of cake design is heavily reliant on the kit that you have at home; the wonderful toys that you have in your cake decorating arsenal, and the knowledge of how to use them. In this regular feature, I like to focus on new techniques and new bits of kit.

The airbrush kit I use was created by Squires Kitchen. It is an investment at £150 but this is pretty much everything you need to get up and running and it should last you for many years of happy airbrushing. I use mine not only for adding colour effects but also for simply adding solid block colour, where the depth or darkness of a colour would mean adding far too much colour to my sugarpaste or using pre-coloured sugarpaste.

I also used Stamp-a-Cake to create the motif on this design. Available from The Cake Decorating Company (my top tip for finding really interesting new products from around the world, beautifully curated and stocked in the UK), Stamp-a-Cake is far from an exact science but it creates organic and interesting designs in a matter of moments.

I am such a sucker for fun bits of cake kit!

I love the results that came from mixing these two new mediums and, if you would like to see exactly how to bring them together in cake form, pick up a copy of Cake Decorating Heaven today.

And whilst we are talking about new kit and new techniques, I should say that I will be attending the Squires Kitchen Exhibition at Farnham Maltings this weekend – one day is never enough for me, I’ll be there both days! I am not exhibiting anything myself or holding any classes, I am simply there as a punter and very much looking forward to checking out all of the new products on offer and admiring the latest techniques on show.

Tickets are still available if you would like to attend. Just click here for all of the details (and be sure to enter the competition to win a year’s supply of sugarpaste!) and please be sure to say hello to me if you see me wandering around. I love to talk cake with fellow enthusiasts and am happy to answer any cakey questions if you have any.
