You all know what a history geek I am and it is with no small sense of joy that I undertake the challenge to actually create some of the cakes that I have envisioned baking for great figures from history. Well, you can decide for yourself whether or not you believe them to be great – I think they are all wonderful!
These flights of fantasy are not purely exercises in self-indulgence as each one comes complete with step by step photographs, enabling you to create the same finishes at home. Perhaps you are not as keen to bake for these long-departed personalities but maybe your Mum loves swans, or you have been asked to make a Wedding Cake for one of the Queen’s Swan-Uppers as I was last summer. You never know when you will need to know how to make a sugar swan.
In my line of work, that is true!
Each step by step tutorial comes prefaced by a little waffle in which I get to share my love of history and cake. Believe me, the good fortune of this is not lost on me. After being told several years ago that combining history and cake was ‘a bit niche’, I cannot thank the editorial team at Cake Decoration & Sugarcraft Magazine enough for embracing my weirdness!
